3 Awesome Ciders of Summer

Looking for the refreshing flavors found in the Ciders of Summer? Check out Mountain State Beverages top picks for Summer 2018.

With the summer season comes a switch to lighter, more drinkable beverages.  Although the craft beer scene is buzzing these days with all sorts of new and exciting variants, one would be amiss to overlook the emerging behemoths in the world of cider. For many, cider has been one of those drinks you naturally gravitate to or you don’t. Well, in 2018 that’s about to change. It would appear craft beer makers aren’t the only ones with refreshingly flavor packed tricks up their sleeves. If you’re ready for some ciders that’ll make you a true believer, take a gander at our picks for the ciders of summer.

BOLD ROCK HARD CIDER – ROSÉ

ALC BY VOL 6.0%

Available in 12oz, Pony Keg, and Draft

It’s easy to understand why rosé ciders have been dubbed the hottest beverage of the summer. Even for those who have never tried one, it’s not hard to understand the appeal. Rosé wines are light and refreshing in their own right. It’s only logical that an effervescent cider punch up, with its crispness and drinkability, would make for a match in heaven. And of all the cideries tossing their hats in the rosé ring, few are doing it with the precision of Bold Rock Hard Cider.

WOODCHUCK HARD CIDER – PEAR GINGER

ALC BY VOL 5.0%

Available in 12oz and Draft

One of the key differences separating ciders from the world of beer is how refreshing they can be in comparison. None so much represent this more than Woodchuck’s Pear Ginger. This crisp ripe pear cider is absolutely bursting at the seams with a surprisingly welcoming ginger tanginess, making it perfect for those hot summer days or nights.

BOLD ROCK HARD CIDER – BLACKBERRY

I know, I know… Bold Rock, again? Well, their latest offering, Blackberry, is actually so nice we had to mention Bold Rock twice. This fruit-forward summer seasonal was designed for the express purpose of being the perfect summer beverage. Not overly sweet but definitely overly refreshing, Blackberry is a hard cider which should most certainly not be overlooked this season.

Three Incredible Variations on the Old-Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail

Looking for the refreshing flavors found in the Beers? Check out Mountain State Beverages Old-Fashioned "Cocktails"
All those familiar with Old-Fashioneds know it’s pretty much as straightforward of a cocktail as you’re likely to find. The ingredient list is simple, water, sugar, bitters, whiskey and of course, a little twist of citrus served up with ice. The truth is, although the Old-Fashioned may seem boring to the uninitiated it is, in reality, anything but. This drink has stood the test of time mostly due in part to its elegant simplicity which also accounts for why it’s such a perfect target for recipe variations.

“Whiskey Cocktail” Old-Fashioned

The Whiskey Cocktail recipe first appeared in the classic book How to Mix Drinks, which was published in 1862. A fun fact: The Whiskey Cocktail is widely considered the first cocktail ever created.

Ingredients
2 oz Virgil Kane Robber Baron Rye whiskey
0.25 oz gum or simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Lemon peel

Preparation
Stir ingredients with ice in a separate mixing glass until perfectly chilled. Strain into a cocktail/Martini glass (not Old-Fashioned glass).
Cut the fresh lemon peel and squeeze the oils into the glass then drop it in.

“Agave Cocktail” Old-Fashioned

“This Old-Fashioned variation has subtle smokiness and the agave and tequila give the drink a unique punch.

Ingredients
2 oz El Jimador anejo tequila
.5 oz agave nectar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Freshly grated cinnamon

Preparation
Combine ingredients (except cinnamon) in a standard Old-Fashioned glass. Add one large chunk of ice and then stir until perfectly chilled.
Garnish with grated cinnamon.

“The Bartender” Old-Fashioned

This variation on the Old-Fashioned utilizes Fernet-Branca to give this classic a welcoming pop.

Ingredients
2 oz Woodford Reserve bourbon
0.25 oz Fernet Branca
1 sugar cube
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Lemon twist

Preparation
Muddle together bitters, sugar, and some drops of warm water in your Old-Fashioned glass. Add bourbon, Fernet and ice then stir until chilled. Twist lemon peel over the drink and drop it in.

To celebrate the emergence of flowers, fruits, and cool breezes, we have found some light and refreshing beers perfect for the coming months. Read our 4 Awesome Beers of Spring list, and pour a pint before the snow melts!

OBERON ALE

5.8% ABV

Oberon is a wheat ale that Bell’s Brewery fans look forward to every year. Oberon is fermented with their house ale yeast that mixes spicy hop characteristics with a mild fruity aroma. Made with only 4 ingredients, The wheat malt makes for a smooth mouthfeel, making it a perfect spring beer. Oberon is the color and scent of sunny afternoon.

ROCKFISH WHEAT

5.3% ABV

This is an extremely refreshing warm-weather favorite that features yeast-driven banana and subtle nuanced clove flavors with light citrusy undertones. This offering from Blue Mountain is a perfect day beer and is delicious when served with a slice of lemon! Rockfish Wheat is available till July.

BLEACHER BEER CRUSHABLE LAGER

4.6% ABV

This light lager only comes in a can and with good reason, it’s meant for drinking in the outdoors. The low 4.6% ABV makes this beer rather drinkable (or as Flying Dog Brewery likes to say, crushable). It is said that this beer pairs nicely with “peanuts, Cracker Jacks and the sun on your back.”

TARTASTIC RASPBERRY LIME ALE

4.2% ABV

This fun and delicious beer from New Belgium might possibly be the perfect springtime beer. It’s low 4.2% makes it extremely drinkable. How To Choose The Perfect Craft Beer For You

For those new to the craft beer world, this list lets you begin to figure out for yourself the types of beers you naturally gravitate to such as bitter, sweet, hoppy, or dark.

How To Choose The Right Craft Beer For You

Walk into almost any bar these days and one thing is immediately apparent, beer selections have become massive. The truth is, with so many options available many people stick with their time-tested favorites and this is with good reason. It’s disappointing to pay for a pint of craft beer just to take a sip and realize you just threw your money right in the trash. The thing is though, selecting the right craft beer for your personal tastes is an art form all unto itself. To help give you a better understanding of how to approach a beer quest of your own, Mountain State Beverage has compiled these simple yet helpful tips.

Consider The Order In Which You’re Drinking Your Beers

Which beer you start out with for the evening is incredibly important when exploring new and different styles. If you overload your taste receptors with a strong, overpowering or rich beer too early you run the risk of ruining any chances of enjoying a lighter or more fragrant beer later. Anyone who has had this happen knows, an unpleasantly strong beer flavor can hang around in your mouth for hours in the worst way.

With this said it’s important to make sure that your first round is something crisp and light. This means staying away from beers that are particularly bitter as well. We suggest you consider an aromatic beer to start, such as New Belgium Brewery’s Belgium White. Now that you’ve established a nice balanced base you can consider stepping things up with hoppier selections such as Laughing Dog Brewing’s India Pale Ale with hints of Citrus or Magic Hat’s Single Chair Golden Ale. At this point, your taste buds are warmed up and ready to go. If you’re feeling like trying out a stronger more robust beer for the first time, such as Flying Dog Brewery’s Gonzo Imperial Stout, this is the time.

Ask For A Beer Menu

If you’re feeling experimental, never just walk into a bar and ask the wait staff what they recommend. For one thing, the bar or restaurant could have a partnership with a particular brewer or they could simply tell you their personal favorite or the most sold beer. This is a bad recipe when exploring new beer terrain (unless you know the right questions to ask). Any reputable establishment pouring craft beer will have a beer list with descriptions and key ingredients. Just like when ordering dinner you get a visual of what’s available and which beers match your personal tastes or appetite.

Keep Track Of What You’ve Tried

During your beer quest always remember to record (either mentally or maybe on your phone) of which you gravitated towards and which were a big, “what the hell was that?” This might seem easy enough but with all the new flavor combinations and brewing methods, it can be easy to lose track considering the sheer number of beers available these days. For those new to the craft beer world, keeping a list lets you begin to figure out for yourself the types of beers you naturally gravitate to such as bitter, sweet, hoppy, or dark. Once you have an understanding of what you like you can start to have a more informed dialogue with bartenders when asking for recommendations, which brings us to the next point…

Talk To Your Bartender

Many modern craft beer bars have giant beer lists or exhausting chalkboard menus on the wall. The last thing you want to do when choosing a new beer to try is to sit and try to navigate a hundred different beers, especially if you don’t know what’s what. This is the time to kick up a conversation with the bartender (instead of the wait staff). You’ll know right away if you’re in the right place if the bartender is clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about discussing beers with you. If you’re a newbie to craft beer don’t be shy about making that immediately clear. A bartender’s tastes are usually quite advanced so keep in mind that their personal favorite might be too complex for someone new to the world of craft beer. Just be honest because it doesn’t do you any good to pretend you have experience you do not. Tell them what you’ve tried and what you’ve liked or what you didn’t and then trust in their expertise.

Explore With A Buddy

When setting out on your beer journey it’s always better to go with a friend or a group. This basically comes down to the fact that the more people you have with you the more beers that can be tasted (if you’re ok with sharing that is). You also get the chance to chat about your experience and hear about why your mates prefer the beers they do. Most importantly it makes the whole experience more fun when you have comrades in arms. How else will you get made fun of for ordering the cookie flavored oatmeal stout?

It’s unlike anything we’ve tasted in nearly two decades of IPA experimentation, and another lupulin-laced creation we’re excited to present to hopheads everywhere.

This ain’t no just-add-juice approach. This one is for adults. We use bountiful whole tangerine purée, which brings pithy, crisp bitterness to the citrus flavor. In addition to the complexities of the tangerine — the likes of which you can only get by using the whole fruit — we judiciously employ just a hint of whole pineapple for a backnote (you’d likely not even pick it out of the mix if we didn’t tell you it was there). We’re not looking for a sweet concoction to appease the “I want my beer to taste like fruit juice” crowd. This is Stone. We like our IPAs to taste like IPAs. Big, bold and not for kids.
